“Oh I had a friend who was a freelance writer, they never made any money” 

“I tried writing once but you only get paid $5 per blog – we can’t complete with the pricing from India/Asia” 

“Freelancing is hard. You’ve got to be constantly fighting to find new clients” 

The thing is, they’re all wrong. 

Freelance writing can be a wonderfully easy, fulfilling and very profitable career – if you do it right. 

The thing is, most freelancers do it wrong. Here’s how… 

They Go Into It With An Employee Mindset. 

They think that clients will just fall into their laps, that they won’t have to market themselves or be strategic in building their business. 

Because that’s what freelancing is – a business. 

Sure, you and your writing skills are the product – but it’s still a business and needs to be treated like one. 

But it’s not big and scary like some businesses. 

You don’t need premises or staff. You don’t need to plough thousands into marketing, selling and servicing your clients. 

You just need to have a strategy for finding the right type of clients that will keep paying you month after month to create awesome content for them.

Freelancer sites like PeoplePerHour.com and fiverr.com are like the Asda (or Trader Joe’s if you’re American) of the freelance world. 

People go there to find cheap labour. They’re looking to spend as little as possible. 

Not only is it hugely competitive so you’ll probably never get many clients (well, unless you slash your prices) but these clients are THE WORST. 

Bargain basement clients look for cheap writers because they either don’t understand or don’t value the expertise it takes to create compelling content that converts sales. 

Build a business with this type of client and you’re in for a world of pain. 

They Think They Can Do It Alone

Most people think freelancing is gonna be easy. You just create a logo, pop a post on Facebook and BOOM! You’ll be an overnight success. 

But it really doesn’t work that way. 

In fact, most freelancers waste years chasing the wrong clients, creating crap content and failing to achieve the success they desire because they don’t ask the right people for help

I was one of those people. For the first year of my freelance career, I winged it. I went it alone. And it was HARD. 

I went from no clients to difficult clients, back to no clients. I worked long hours for crap money and just couldn’t figure out where I was going wrong

Then I found a mentor. Another writer who took me under his wing and showed me how to play the freelance game in a way that wins. 

Within a few months, my business was transformed. I was packing my bags and heading off on a 2 year European adventure with my kids, all funded by my freelance writing which was giving me a healthy and reliable income every month, just working 10-20 hours per week. 

Fast forward to today and I’ve honed my skills and developed a bulletproof system for getting more of the right clients and creating a freelance business that brings me easy cash and no stress month after month. 

But not everyone is as lucky as I am.
